Specification of

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic polymer group, easily formed by using heat. This type of plastic is widely used in the chemical industry today. This plastic has many advantages, namely thermal resistance compared to other types of plastic, resistant to impact, and very clear. In the identification of plastics, polycarbonate is at number 7.

Polycarbonate is so called because this plastic consists of a polymer with a carbonate group (-O- (C = O) -O-) in a long molecular chain. The most common type of polycarbonate is bisphenol A (BPA). Polycarbonate is a durable material that can be laminated into bulletproof glass. Despite having high resistance to impact, polycarbonate is easily scratched so hard coating is needed to make eyeglasses and automotive exterior lenses using polycarbonate and other optical materials because polycarbonate is very clear and has the ability to transmit very good light compared to glass types the other. The nature of polycarbonate is similar to polymethyl methacrylate (acrylic), but polycarbonate is stronger and can be used at high temperatures, although it is more expensive.

The polycarbonate will undergo glass transition at a temperature of 150 oC so that the polycarbonate will gradually soften above this temperature, and begin to melt at 300 oC.
