TEFLON PTFE
PolyTetra Fluoro Ethylene (PTFE) is a fluorocarbon based polymer and is usually abbreviated as PTFE. The Teflon® brand from PTFE is only produced by DuPont. Several other manufacturers make their own PTFE brands which can often be used as substitutes. The fluoroplastic family offers high chemical resistance, low and high temperature capability, resistance to weathering, low friction, electrical and thermal insulation, and "slippery". (see also Teflon® PTFE and Teflon® FEP & PFA Specifications) The mechanical properties of PTFE are low compared to other plastics, but their properties remain at a useful level over a wide temperature range between -100 ° F to + 400 ° F ( - 73 ° C to 204 ° C). Mechanical properties are often improved by adding fillers (see paragraphs below). It has excellent thermal and electrical insulation properties and low coefficient of friction. PTFE is very dense and cannot be processed - it must be compressed and sintered to form a useful shape.
